Mastiff : : Female (spayed) : : X-Large
Archie is a very friendly 3-4 year old male mastiff. He is very friendly. He is extremely underweight at only 78lbs and will need to put on some weight before he is adopted. He is being treated for worms but is heartworm negative, which is simply amazing considering his condition. He gets along with the dogs in his foster home. He will be neutered once he has put on some more weight. Update on Archie: He is really a lover, loves to put his head in his foster moms lap and drool all over her and gives kisses, too! This is amazing, as it is apparent from scars on his face and legs that he has had a very rough life. He "dogs" her every step and is just happy to be there. He won't go back to the vet until next week, but we're guessing he's already gained 15 - 20 pounds and will eat any time . His coat is getting softer and shiny and his eyes brighter and his gaze more casual and less intense. He crates well now, but spends about 10 minutes complaining about it. I think he's whining, but it sounds like he's cursing under his breath. He loves to steal the blanket off his foster moms lap and make her get up to come and get it back. He walks pretty well on lead, but tends to change directions a lot. He is very intrigued with the birds and cats, goes on point for either and tries to bite the birds through the cage bars. He hasn't figured out yet, with his nose pressed against the bars, he can't bite them, but they can bite him. The African Gray eggs this on by whistling at him and calling, Good Boy! C'mere! He shows intense interest in the cat and would probably do better in a home with no cats. He ignores or sniffs and then ignores the little dogs, even when they are barking at him. He recognizes his pack, even the small dogs. Archie was introduced to children ranging in ages from 7-12 and he was very excited to see them and a little pushy for attention, but never aggressive or avoidant. He can be distracted with a lot of effort, but he goes right back unless we completely leave the area. His manners are improving, but he will still jump up for a treat or a carried bowl of dog food and likes to investigate the counters and will take something if he wants it. UPDATE:11/24/06 Archie is up to 117lbs! He has had his vaccinations and will be neutered in about 7-10 days. The bite on his leg is healing nicely. He should be ready for adoption the first week of December if everything goes as planned. More about ArchieGood with Dogs Sponsors: Sue Thompson, Vicki & Gary Collins
